Buying Iranian dates for regional markets: a grading, storage and packing checklist

A buyer-ready method for defining date format, commercial grade, representative sampling, storage controls, retail or bulk packing and landed-cost acceptance before an RFQ becomes an order.

A variety name and an attractive photograph do not make two date offers comparable. Lots sold under the same name can differ in size, uniformity, texture, crushed or split fruit, foreign matter, infestation, moisture behaviour and transport resilience. A professional regional purchase starts by translating the needs of the retailer, wholesaler or manufacturer into a testable acceptance file.

02

Define the application and destination before selecting the variety. State whether the dates are for premium retail, gifting, food service, processing or bulk resale; whether they are pitted or unpitted, natural or processed, single-variety or blended. The destination changes the unit size, label language, expected shelf performance, outer carton and delivery model. A format that works for a premium tray may be inefficient for paste, syrup or industrial use.

03

Write the commercial grade in measurable language. UNECE Standard DDP-08 provides a useful framework for the marketing and commercial quality control of dates, but citing the standard is not the same as accepting a lot. The buying specification should record variety or type, presentation, agreed class or quality level, size or weight range, uniformity and tolerances for damaged, immature, fermented, mouldy, dirty or pest-affected fruit and foreign matter. Attach a method to every number.

04

Connect the approval sample to the commercial batch. A hand-picked sample from one carton cannot represent several pallets. Agree the number of packages sampled, sampling points, composite-sample weight and sealing method for retained references. The batch identifier on the sample, certificate of analysis, packing list and shipping labels should match. Keep aligned retained samples with seller and buyer or an independent inspector so that any discrepancy has a defined reference.

05

Define storage for the actual variety, moisture profile, pack and route. Do not apply one universal temperature to every date format. Ask the supplier to state recommended temperature and relative humidity, expected holding period, loading condition and monitoring approach for the exact product. The buyer should decide whether ambient, controlled or refrigerated transport is appropriate for the route and season, where a data logger is placed and at which handover point the record is reviewed.

06

Treat packaging as part of quality acceptance. For bulk supply, specify net weight, liner material and closure, carton compression strength, units per pallet and stacking pattern. For retail packs, review moisture protection, seal integrity, visibility, crush control, batch legibility and shelf dimensions. Test a filled pack under a route-relevant handling simulation; approving an empty pouch does not prove performance with real product.

07

Align label, carton and documents with the destination. Product name, variety where claimed, net weight, country of origin, batch code, dates, storage statement and responsible-operator information should remain consistent across layers. Recheck destination rules for language, nutrition, allergens, marketing claims and import documents at the order date. A commercial quality standard does not replace destination law.

08

Compare landed outcome, not the first price per kilogram. Normalise grade, likely loss, real net weight, packing, testing, re-sorting, storage, freight and rejection exposure before ranking offers. Put quantity, destination, delivery window, packing model, risk-transfer point and rejection procedure beside the technical specification in the RFQ. That structure makes Iranian and regional options easier to compare and a successful order easier to repeat.
